Enjoy Autumnʼs last weekend, tropical style, amid the intoxicating scent and color of natureʼs
masterpiece, the orchid. The Delray Beach Orchid Society Invites you to its annual American Orchid
Society judged show and sale, Orchids on the Square, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 26th, 27th
and 28th from 10 am to 5 pm.
The show is held in the gymnasium at Old School Square, corner of Atlantic
and Swinton Avenues in downtown Delray Beach, Florida, Admission is $5.00 each day or $8.00 for a
three day pass.
Upon entering the show, you will be swept away by the breathtaking profusion of rare, beautiful and
delightfully fragrant flowers gracing the vendorsʼ booths. For orchid hobbyists, itʼs like being a kid in a
candy store. Plants that you wonʼt see in the local home center are here in glorious abundance.
The
growers, some of the best in Florida, are happy to share their expertise about the care and culture of their specialties. Other vendors are offering orchid growing supplies, along with excellent advice and
recommendations, also not found in the local home center.
As you continue to explore, you will find an educational exhibit designed by student judges to expand
your knowledge of orchid care and culture. Then you will discover a charming exhibit of the artistry of Mr.
Johnstonnʼs Banyon Creek Elementary 5th grade class, on display for the poster contest held each year
in partnership with the Society.
You will come across a display of a variety of vendor-donated orchid plants for a raffle to benefit the
Society. Volunteer members will be on hand to sell tickets and talk about the Society and itʼs activities.
There will also be an exclusive raffle, limited to 100 tickets, for a fabulous professionally designed orchid arrangement to adorn your home for the holidays.
Upstairs, on the balcony, growers display their finest plants for the American Orchid Society judging. The displays showcase the creativity and artistry of the individual growers as they strive to show their plants to
their best advantage. Photo opportunities abound.
The Delray Beach Orchid Society was founded in 1974. Itʼs activities include a monthly meeting with
guest speakers sharing their orchid expertise, and other activities for the education and enjoyment of the
members. During the year, field trips add to the fun.
The groupʼs first show was in 1991 at the old shopping center that became the Plaza at Delray. From
there it moved to the Boynton Beach Mall, then, feeling the need for a dedicated venue and wanting to be
back in Delray, the group moved the show to Old School Square. With the help of the City of Delray
Beach and the staff at Old School Square, the show, unique in its historic setting, now draws over three
thousand visitors every year.
